Seduction of the Innocent
As a follow-up to a much earlier post about comics and their anti-drugs stance, here are a couple of interesting anti-drug warnings from the mid-sixties to the early seventies. First up, a panel from: Amazing Spider-Man #97 - June, 1971 "In The Grip Of The Goblin" (click for large)
Story: Stan Lee. Pencils: Gil Kane. Inks: Frank Giacoia. Letters: Sam Rosen. As Marvel Wikia states: This issue was published without the Comic Book Authority Code, due to the fact that the Code did not approve any instance of illegal drug use in comic book publications at the time. Since Stan Lee's story reflected the drug use in negative light, Marvel published the story anyway. Due to the stories popularity, it led to the first revision of the Code.
On the same theme, here's an interesting film from the mid-sixties: The Seduction of the Innocent.

Lest We Forget . . .
Summertime
To celebrate the fact that it's actually not raining today (in the UK anyhow), here's a brand new and particularly uplifting track from William Orbit.

Thwip!
I saw it and I really enjoyed it! That's all I'm going to say, because reviews are for reviewers.
UPDATE I just had a thought. Why has nobody thought of doing a retro reboot of Spider-Man based on the comics of the 60's? With the high standard of historically accurate styling, a la Madmen these days, it would make a really nice alternative. Could make a good tv series too.
UPDATE 2 Well, ilove77 just agreed and I put a poll up and four others did too, so it's obviously unanimous!

This Here's a Hijack!
Another piece of classic 2000AD production art but this one had no black-line overlay. The line work was by Carlos Ezquerra and the colours were more than likely painted by the late great Tom Frame. Prog #284 - October, 1982.

Lisette*
I was on a treasure hunt a few weeks back, rummaging around in junk shops with Strictly Kev who is also a keen collector of retro ephemera and we found a whole pile of these French Lisette comics from the 1960's. They were so beautifully designed and illustrated that we bought them all. Here are a couple of scans from the interior pages. Kev has posted some from his collection on his blog too, which is always well worth a look! The Giant Robot one is fab!

Twice Is The Only Way To Live
From the bookshelf; the front and back of my James Bond Pan book from 1966. This must have been published in advance of the film which I saw on the big screen as a kid in 1967. James Bond films were always a major event for my family and Maurice Binder's title sequence accompanied by John Barry and Nancy Sinatra's theme was such a thrill for me at the time that it left a lasting impression. Nick Setchfield at SFX has just written a piece about the 5th Bond film as the next instalment of his James Bond marathon here and if you like "What if?" scenarios, you might want to check out the alternative title track by Julie Rogers, on this link.

The Fink is Loose!
To celebrate the fact that I found yet more old 2000AD production art yesterday, alongside my Debbie Harry calendar, I'm going to post a double dose of vintage thrills; starting with this one from Prog #282, 18th September 1982. (The same year as my Debbie Harry calendar - serendipity!). The credits are on the artwork.

Barbarella on The Telly?
According to The Wrap, "Drive" director Nicolas Refn is working with Gaumont International Television on a Barbarella TV series based on the Jean-Claude Forest comic-book character made famous by the 1968 Jane Fonda film of the same name". Sounds like it could be great with Refn's stylistic direction. Thanks to Eric Van Lustbader for the heads up on that one. On the same subject and coincidentally, Nick Setchfield of SFX just sent me the link to the unused Barbarella theme, sung by Jackie Lee of White Horses fame. I mentioned it before, but I'll do it again, Nick is writing a marathon James Bond retrospective on the SFX site and he's already up to Thunderball on this link. Here's the original title sequence to Barbarella, but with Jackie Lee's version of the theme song. She's written an interesting story about how and why it didn't make the final cut on her YouTube channel.

Bring on The Glam!

So there we were, on the way to The Michael Hoppen Gallery, just off the King's Road in Chelsea to the private view of Ellen von Unwerth's "Do Not Disturb!" I was strolling along with Jason Atomic and Manko when they suddenly spotted Bishi who was also heading to the same event. Keen to try out my new compact camera, I took a couple of shots along the way - Abbey Road stylee... sort of.
Jason, Manko and Bishi with a little bit of camera-shake despite the wiggling, anti-camera shake thing being switched on. Something I'm going to have to look into.
Well, we finally got there and it was absolutely RAMMED! as you can see. This didn't stop Manko from finding Ellen von Unwerth, who took an instant liking to her 'Charles of London' dress. (I promise you there are no product placements on here, but these things are always worth noting).
She was also impressed that Manko had brought her 'Revenge' book along for her to sign.
Which she did. Then Bishi got to have a chat too.
Then we went outside and just as I'd taken a shot of Manko proudly displaying her signed book, Jason suddenly legged it off down the road after mumbling something that sounded like "Kelly Brook". And lo and behold, it was! Manko got the shots and great shots they are too. (click for large)
Unbeknown to the world at large, Jason has always had a sort of fascination for Kelly Brook, revealed for the first time by these pictures that Manko took later on in the evening.
On the whole, I'd say that was a fun night out and Ellen von Unwerth's new body of work was just as amazing as it always is. She is one of the absolute Best after all! It's on 'til July 21st - Details below. Meanwhile, to round things off magnificently, here's the beautiful title track from Bishi's new album, Albion Voice. Her website is great too. Here's the link.
