For all that I'm not a fan of the, er, Playboy "philosophy", I do admire the way Hefner spared no expense at times with that magazine. Special paper stocks, custom die-cuts, embossing....really does make the current day edition look sad indeed (or the last time I saw one, anyway).
He certainly was a pioneer of sorts and they were different times. Having collected most of these 1960's issues, the design and photography is something to behold. It really does capture the zeitgeist of that period and all the articles and interviews were top notch too. He got the BEST contributors.
